Why have it both ways? There is some academic debate over whether this 给 is actually a <a href="preposition" class="uri" title= "wikilink">preposition</a> or a type of verb (often called a "co-verb"), or even a type of <a href="complement" class="uri" title="wikilink">complement</a>.
