  1. Standard Chinese A Modular Approach
  2. Orientation Module Unit 1
  3. Production Tape 1
  4. This tape covers the same material as the first comprehension tape in the module
  5. Questions and answers involving personal names and titles
  6. Instead of just listening, now you are to participate actively
  7. You may have hardly begun your work on the sound system of Chinese
  8. and so this tape provides some pointers on the harder consonants and vowels that come up
  9. But you should at least have gone through the first pronunciation and romanization tape
  10. the one on the four tones
  11. You'll need to pay particular attention to identifying and remembering the tone patterns of words
  12. As a speaker of English, you're not in the habit of associating contours of pitch with individual words
  13. As a student of Chinese, you must develop that habit
  14. Remember, there's now such thing as the right word but in the wrong tone
  15. Here's the first exchange you had on the comprehension tape, live
  16. 你是誰?
  17. 我是王大年
  18. Again
  19. 你是谁?
  20. 我是王大年
  21. Here it is with the word for word translation
  22. 你是谁?
  23. You are who?
  24. 我是王大年
  25. I am Wang Danian
  26. So far, you've only been listening
  27. Now you're going to begin to take the part of Daniel King and answer the question
  28. Let's build up to it word by word
  29. First try repeating Mr. King's Chinese name
  30. 王大年 after the speaker
  31. 王大年
  32. 王大年
  33. 王大年
  34. Getting a sequence of three tones at once can be difficult
  35. Try repeating the rising tone surname alone
  36. Now try repeating the falling rising giving name
  37. 大年
  38. 大年
  39. 大年
  40. And now try repeating the full name, rising falling rising
  41. 王大年
  42. 王大年
  43. 王大年
  44. Now try saying the full name by yourself
  45. And then repeat after the speaker
  46. 王大年
  47. Did you get the tone pattern right?
  48. Or did you have to correct yourself on the repetition?
  49. Try saying the full name again and repeat
  50. 王大年
  51. Now try repeating the word for I
  52. Be sure to give it the low tone
  53. Repeat I again
  54. Try saying I by yourself and repeat
  55. Set by itself, the word for Am
  56. Is in the falling tone, try repeating Am
  57. The vowel in 是
  58. Is just a prolonged R sound
  59. Try repeating Am again
  60. To make this R sound, you had to curl the tip of your tongue back
  61. The SH part of 是
  62. is also pronounced with the tip of the tongue curled back
  63. in what we call the retroflex position
  64. Try repeating 是 again
  65. making sure to keep the tip of your tongue curled back throughout
  66. Try saying Am by yourself and repeat
  67. We are translating 是 as Am here
  68. because we are working on the sentence
  69. I am 王大年
  70. But you'll remember that it can also be translated R and Is
  71. In other words, 是 is the verb to be
  72. The word Am often gets partly swallowed up in English
  73. so that I Am is contracted to I
  74. In just the same way, the word 是
  75. is often weakened in the Chinese sentence
  76. to the point where nothing is left
  77. but a toneless SH sound
  78. Listen
  79. 我是王大年
  80. 我是王大年
  81. But when it is emphasized as in Yes I Am
  82. keeps us long R sound and the falling tone
  83. Listen
  84. 我是王大年
  85. 我是王大年
  86. Try repeating the second speaker's answer in the exchange
  87. 你是谁
  88. 我是王大年
  89. Again
  90. 你是谁
  91. 我是王大年
  92. This time try giving the answer ahead of the second speaker
  93. and then repeat
  94. 你是谁
  95. 我是王大年
  96. Again
  97. 你是谁
  98. 我是王大年
  99. Here's another live exchange
  100. Listen
  101. 你是谁
  102. 我是胡美玲
  103. Again
  104. 你是谁
  105. 我是胡美玲
  106. Try repeating Miss 胡美玲's surname
  107. Her's is the most common of the four surnames spelled H-U
  108. The one in the rising tone
  109. Now try repeating her given name 美玲
  110. The tones are low rising
  111. 美玲
  112. And now try repeating her full name
  113. 胡美玲
  114. 胡美玲
  115. 胡美玲
  116. Try saying the full name yourself and then repeat
  117. 胡美玲
  118. Now let's see if you can answer a rather unlikely question from Miss 胡
  119. Ahead of Mr. King
  120. Repeat his answer after him
  121. 我是谁
  122. 你是胡美玲
  123. Did you say you are胡美玲
  124. Try it again
  125. 我是谁
  126. 你是胡美玲
  127. Here's the next exchange you had on the comprehension tape
  128. Listen
  129. 你姓什么
  130. 我姓王
  131. Again

  137. You are surnamed what
  138. 我姓王
  139. I am surnamed 王
  140. Try repeating to be surnamed
  141. 我姓
  142. Notice that it starts with a sound that is neither quite like English S nor quite like English SH
  143. Listen
  144. 我姓
  145. It might help to think of 姓 as halfway between the first syllables of the English word single and shingle
  146. If it sounds more like shingle to you, notice these two differences
  147. 姓 is pronounced with the tongue farther forward and with the lips spread
  148. First, try repeating 姓
  149. Concentrate on keeping your tongue forward in a tight E position
  150. Now, without losing the tongue position, concentrate on spreading your lips rather than protruding them
  151. Let's compare the consonants of 是 and 姓
  152. Try repeating
  153. Try saying to be surnamed and repeat
  154. Now try repeating the answer in the exchange

  156. 我姓王
  157. Again
  158. 你姓什么
  159. 我姓王
  160. This time give the answer ahead of the second speaker and then repeat it after him
  161. 你姓什么
  162. 我姓王
  163. Again
  164. 你姓什么
  165. 我姓王
  166. Now listen carefully to Miss Hu and try to answer her question ahead of Mr. King

  169. 你姓胡
  170. Try it again
  171. 我是胡美玲
  172. 我姓什么

  174. Let's see if you can give the appropriate answers to the two questions
  175. Who are you and what's your name
  176. Taking the part of 王大年
  177. Answer before the second speaker and then repeat after him

  180. 你姓什么
  181. 我姓王
  182. 你姓什么
  183. 我姓王
  184. 你是谁

  217. 马明李
  218. 马明李
