Gate of Supreme Harmony 太和门

The lions in front of the Gate of Supreme Harmony 太和门 (Tàihé Mén) are the largest in the palace. The female lion (shown) stands on the west side of the stairway and the male on the east. The female has a cub under her foot which stands for fertility and prosperity and the male plays with a ball which stands for the unity of China. The lions are of cast bronze.
