Emperor Qianlong 乾隆 (Qiánlóng, 1711 – 1799) was a gifted poet, calligrapher and painter. He composed a poem to commemorate repairs made in 1785 to the bridge. You can see the poem written on the stone tablet, stele, within the monument.

The stele is 4.25 meters tall, 1.27 meters wide, and .84 meters thick. It is located at the east end of the Marco Polo Bridge. It is located at the east end of the Marco Polo Bridge. There is a similar monument at the west end of the bridge erected by Emperor Kangxi.
