Zuo'anmen
左安门

20年代初的左安门箭楼。

The arrow tower of Zuo'anmen in the early 1920s. This is the next gate as we circle the Outer City Wall. (See map below). Notice that the interior side of the arrow towers have very few openings. This is so that if the enemy was able to breech the external wall of the tower they would have limited access to the city. If they were able to make it through the doors, they would face the second interior gate and the defending forces would still have control of the upper walls. The defenders could then rain down arrows and spears upon the enemy trapped within the enclosure.
