The main tower of Guang'anmen with the arrow tower and defensive enclosure as it was in the 1920s. This picture clearly shows the relationship between the three elements of the gate defenses. The wooden ceremonial gate would have been an easy target for fire, even before the introduction of cannon. The wooden superstructures regularly burnt due to accidents and lightning strikes. They were the tallest buildings around and contained metal armaments that attracted lightning. |
