Elaborate wood carvings on a traditional entryway mark the Yangping Opera House 阳平会馆戏楼 (Yángpíng Huìguǎn Xìlóu) was built in 1652. It is located in the Xiaojiang Hutong 前门外小江胡同 (Qiánmén Wàixiǎojiāng Hútòng). It opened in 2009 after extensive renovations begun in 2002. It will be the home of a Peking Opera company.
The theater is three stories tall and the stage has two levels (see below). These pictures were taken before the renovations. Normally the stage would be painted with enamel. There are famous frescoes of traditional Chinese stories on the walls. The opera house served as a gathering place for people from Yangping when it was built. 会馆 Huìguǎn means club for fellow countrymen. |
