Beijing Underground City 北京地下城

I don't know how many of the portraits displayed would have been planned for the original air-raid shelters. The fact that upon completion, the project was abandonned and converted to other uses means that those pictures that are hung were added when the site became a tourist destination.

They give a glimpse of the tone of the time. 1969 was in the middle of the Cultural Revolution. But the construction has nothing to do with the Cultural Revolution except that it gave the conditions that made ready labor available and the neighborhood organizations that made sure that it was offered.
