Ruifuxiang Silk 瑞蚨祥绸布店 (Ruìfúxiáng Chóubùdiàn) has been here since 1862. The store was hit during the shelling in 1900, but was quickly rebuilt.
It was founded as one of a chain of stores across China by Meng Hongsheng, a descendant of Mengzi. Mengzi, or as we know him, Mencius (孟子 Mèng Zǐ) is one of the early Chinese philosophers from the Spring and Autumn period. He is often compared to Aristotle. They sell silks, obviously. But they are famous for wool and satin, as well. The first five star Red flag raised over Tiananmen Square was made of their silk. |
