Zhengyangmen 正阳门 2008

Qianmen 前门
Zhengyangmen 正阳门

This picture of the south side of Zhengyangmen 正阳门 was taken in 2008. It is afternoon, rather than early morning, and there is fresh paint on the superstructure. In 2005, the last of the original materials were replaced. The entire mudworks base was replaced with modern brick. If they used traditional paints on the superstructure the color will mellow to the darker red color that Chinese call 紫色 (zǐsè) and we translate as "purple". We identify purple as being much closer to blue. Color spectrum demarcation is different in different cultures. For instance, colors we associate with red and call orange are seen as associated with the yellow groups by Chinese.
