To the right, you can just see the top of my favorite silk store. That should give you a good idea of its location. If you don't know what I am talking about, you have to go to the earlier picture series. In the center of the modesty wall, behind the group of men, you can just make out the "new hutong" planned for Dashila hutong area. Everything will be neat and tidy, and probably identical. The good thing is that they are trying to attract traditional Chinese businesses to the area. The hutong was once teaming with craftsmen and small factories. Workers and owners both lived there to be near the business. That will no longer be the case. Estimates for homes in the planned residential area come in over $1,000,000. Talk about gentrification! |
