| People know one another in the market. They shop frequently and meet their neighbors. The retired people will visit a local park to exercise and play games with one another. They, too, keep an eye on the neighborhood. Stable neighborhoods with active residents are some of the best crime fighting weapons known to man. Sometimes people feel that it is too much of a good thing, everyone gossips. It is hard to keep a secret, just as it is in a small town.
The alternative is all around in the high rise apartment buildings where people don't even know one other person in their building.
