Various experiments are being conducted in the wildlife preserves in China to increase the wild panda population. Because giant pandas are solitary and the female is in estrus for just a few days each year, the probability of having a male on hand is low. When the giant panda population was higher and denser, it wasn't as difficult to find a mate. One of the things they are trying is to rear young pandas together to see if they will form a more closely knit group and thus breed more often. It will be years before the results will be released. |
