The females of the South American coati 南浣熊 rear their young in nests in the trees. They don't travel until the babies are ready and then they all rejoin the band. A coati can have up to four pups in a nest. The male offspring stay with the band until they are about three years old and then go off to lead a solitary life. The exclusion of the males from the band helps to increase genetic variation as males breed with females from other bands. |
