Along the wall is the kang 炕 (kàng). In this case, it is wooden and has clay pipes running under it. The pipes are the flu from the fire. The heat is distributed through the room, but the warmest thing to do is to sit on the kang. The entire family slept there, played there, and did their homework there. At night thick cotton pads are placed on the kang and more comforters placed on top for bedding. |
