purple rice 紫米 cupcakes with cherries on top

Longtan Park Temple Fair 龙潭湖公园庙会

These steamed rice cakes are special holiday foods. They are made with sticky rice and flavorings. The plate in the foreground is made with purple rice 紫米 (zǐmǐ). It is unhulled and similar to black rice. These cakes are sweet. A common sweetener is coconut with some brown sugar. You can add sesame or dried fruits. The yellow cakes are similarly sweet, but made with white sticky rice. Red cherries decorate both types of cake.
