Wu Wei was born in Jiangxia, modern Wucheng. He was the founder of the Jiangxia School of painting.
He was appointed as a civil official to the Renzhi palace and was further honored as a court painter.
He was also known as Shiying 士英 , his designated name and Xiaoxian 小仙 , his literary name.
The painting is a classic example of Ming Dynasty painting.
