This illustrates one of two major kiln types excavated at the Banpo Neolithic site. The horizontal flue would allow the fire to get hotter than in the next illustration. The amount of soot would be controlled both by the heat of the fire and the type of wood used. The horizontal chamber would collect much of the particulate before it went past the pottery. |
