Famen Temple
法门寺

After 1949 the Famen Temple became a protected cultural site but was used for schools and bureaucratic office space. During the Cultural Revolution many of the temple buiildings and art works were destroyed or damaged in the name of new thought. The abbot of the temple, Liangqing monk (良卿法师), set fire to himself in front of the pagoda, called the True Relic Pagoda. His protest brought more suppression, but after the mid-1970's Buddhism was again allowed limited freedom.
