Shanghai 上海

This picture was taken in 1995 in downtown Shanghai. Notice the apartments above the stores. In some areas, these have become dormitories for people working in factories, new immigrants to the city, and specialized workers under contract to a business. Until recently, it was the responsibility of the work unit to provided housing for its workers. That tradition is still alive today in occupations where workers are not paid enough to afford to rent an apartment on their own.

Below, a traditional concrete frame building was probably built in the 1920s according to its style and construction, now it holds up well with multiple apartments.

Bottom, a neighborhood street market serves the residents as they go to and return from work. City dwellers continue to shop daily for fresh food rather than relying on their refrigerators. Dishes taste the best when the ingredients are crisp an fresh.
