Jiangnan 江南 - West of Shanghai, toward Suzhou

This strip mall specializes in building materials at the moment. It's probably crowded in the morning as construction crews begin the day's work. In 1995, there were earlier forms of the strip mall; single-story cinder block buildings with a series of metal garage doors. They were rented to various merchants and markets and were built close to the edge of the road, convenient to bike and foot traffic. The road had two lanes then. Those have been replaced with grander, larger versions that include parking lots. The metal garage doors remain. This building is set well back from the road, perhaps planning for the day when it will be a six lane highway.
