| To show his appreciation and as an act of filial piety, Pan Yunduan decided to build his father, Pan En, a garden in Shanghai where he could study, contemplate, and write. He hired Zhang Nanyang, a famous landscape artist, to design the garden and lay out the buildings. The work began in 1559 and took about 19 years to finish.
