Little Women was written by Louisa May Alcott in 1868. It is the story of four girls growing up during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Their father is away, serving as a chaplin for the Union Army. Their mother, Marmy, must raise them alone and struggle to pay the bills. The family lost their money when the father tried to help a friend.
The family is not poor, but has to live on an army salary. They try to help those who are even poorer than themselves. The four girls are shown trying to overcome the selfishness, vamity, temper, and shyness of childhood as they try to become women.
The present production was aired on March 13, 1950 on the Lux Radio Theater. The show was produced by Mr. William Keighley, who is also the announcer.
