For the game Speed Numbers, I think it could be improved if one number does not appear twice consecutively. Because sometimes, one number appears even 3 times and then it's easy to do a better score.

This is a good website ! I just discovered it. Thanks a lot.

You have many beautiful things in your museum. I would like to mention that the interesting 6x6 Arabic numeral iron plate magic square from the Yuan dynasty contains a 4x4 so-called panmagic square at its centre. This may be of interest to mathematicians. See f.ex. the Drexel University website "Suzanne Alejandre Magic Squares".Perhaps you could add this to your information.

That's an interesting idea. I had hoped that they would learn the vocabulary by playing the Chinese to English versions of each. The primary purpose is to promote recognition of characters and more importantly, the tones.

This site is so wonderful. Once I found it I really began making progress in my Chinese studies. Thank you for making this available. I appreciate you and all your work every day.

I have one question. I have entered over 1000 characters in my account but the Review Planner stopped counting at 1000. So does the RP drop the early vocabulary to limit total vocabulary words to 1000 or is it still capturing all the vocabulary and this 1000 character indicator is just a glitch?

Thanks again.
08-01-2010 20:24:02
Answered by e-mail. - The accounts are limited to 1000 entries, the earliest entries are dropped out so you don't
constantly review easy words. If there is a word you want
back in - just add it again.

However I've found that most internet cafes here in Shanghai use Realplayer as the default player for the sound files. Unfortunately Realplayer doesn't correctly play back the files in all of the many internet bars I've used.
This means the usefulness of this website is probably unavailable to Chinese who wish to use it to learn English.

Yes, I add to it all the time. When I go yo China I add lots more and record more. Last year I added 40,000 new sound files. There are about 25,000 entries. At the moment I am working on the history of Beijingg pages under the China pages, two new English audio books, and updating the bibliographies. Phew. Lots of work - but little by little.

I hope you enjoy yourself.

Once you build an account with some words and phrases, the qizzes are a
good finish after the flashcards. It gives you a different way of
trying to recall and recognize the characters. There are two levels
of qizzes.

Oh, and another hint. When studying from English to Chinese,
write the character on your knee..or palm.

A native Chinese speaker and a native English speaker sit together to make the sentences -- sometimes they are not a direct translation but what each would say in the same situation in their respective language.

It is normal to learn the sounds of words first, then the symbols. We do that in our native language as well. More pinyin to character practice will help recall and thus make
recognition easier. Seeing the word in multiple contexts also helps, but that is something that happens naturally over time as you read more.

their website by typing the name into Google. It will be
the first one. Then go to Contact Us and send them
an e-mail. They may have one in the store that isn't

If you are a beginner, start with the Topics pages and learn to use the pinyin pronunciation -- and then practice the tones. Both those links are on the upper bar of the Topics page. Because that can be boring, couple it with learning a few phrases from one of the other topics. Everyone wants to be able to say hello and thank you! To practice the tones, I recommend you learn the numbers. Go to the Games page and you will find Flash Animations that will help. First listen, listen, listen. Then try to speak.

Start on the topics pages to get some handy phrases,
if you decide to go deep, your fiancee can help but
it is a good idea to get a text book and then come
back here for patient repetition! Hope you have a

Great website!!
11-07-2005 18:52:49
Tian is probably the character for "day, sky, heaven" -- it has multiple
meanings in different contexts. As a name it would be heaven or sky.
Young children often have nicknames that are doubled -- they often do not
refer to or sound like their real given name. By the way, it would be
pronounced halfway between "tian" and "tien" with two syllables. Look up "day" in my dictionary to hear some people say it.

Comments: Hi - I tried your site out today. I think that a good enhancement would be to allow the learner to structure the words by making focus sets of entries each with a name. Otherwise if you are trying to learn a decent number of characters and words (say 2000), it is not practicable to use your site

We are presently working on a Flashcard program that can be used off-line. Users will be able to add or take out words on their own -- make lists with different names, combine lists, etc. It should be ready in September, but as Microsoft has so often found out, you shouldn't give a date!

Comments: Great ! I have already downloaded 1560 soundfiles and play them at least once a day to attune the ears as well as learning vocab. I found that the hardest thing for me in learning Chinese was listening and catching the meaning among all the homonyms. So your site has given me the means to lick this problem. Many thanks ! It would be nice to be able to locate the latest new additions to the soundfile database with a "What's new" link.

It's a counting song we teach children. Knick Knack Paddywack is
to practice changing vowels quickly -- it is like a tongue twister.

Comments: what is the reason for the chinese culture to perform calligraphy from top to bottom while the western culture writes from left to right?
06-04-2002 08:45:23
Early in Chinese history, they wrote on bamboo strips. The strips were bound
with string or leather into books. The strip suggested the practice of writing down
the length of it. The books were rolled and it became the practice to unroll with the
right hand -- so it became custom to write from the right to the left so you unrolled at
the beginning. At least that's one theory. Confucius wrote his Analects on such strips.
