The match is watched by just some of the many volunteers who worked to make the Olympics possible. Many of them are faculty and staff of Beijing University of Technology. They gave up their evenings and weekends for up to two years to serve on planning committees, organize preliminary events, and train young volunteers in their duties. All the kids who took tickets, gave directions, led athletes, picked up trash, ran errands, and translated for all the newscasters and athletes were volunteers. Keeping track of this volunteer army was more difficult than a military maneuver. |
