Xu Wei was born in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province. His designated name was Wenchang 文长 and his literary
name was Tianchi 天池, but then he changed it to Qingteng 青藤 in his later years. He was a respected poet and
painter as well as a noted calligrapher. His work is very original, taking a new perspective through
freedom of line. This scroll was completed during the Longqing reign (1567-1572) when he was in his prime.
