There is great variety in the patterns used to decorate tiles and houses throughout the history of China. The decorations are often symbolic, but not always. This deer might have been symbolic of good hunting, strength, and prosperity or it could have just been an attractive design the homeowner liked. This tile dates to the Warring States Period of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (475 - 221 BC). It was found at a site in Yongcheng, Fengxiang County. |
