This painted figurine of a kneeling woman was made as a burial object. The maid was to keep Queen Dou of the Western Han Dynasty (202 BC - 220 AD) company. It was unearthed from her tomb. There are several more examples on the following pages. The style of Han Dynasty scultpture varied little over the centuries. It is quite distinctive in its simplicity and grace. The skills of potters were sufficient to have created variation, but either tradition or taste kept the style consistent over the years. |
