| During the Cultural Revolution, temples and Buddhist images all over China were destroyed by units of the Red Guard. This violence wasn't limited to religious symbols, but included almost anything historical or reminiscent of the dynastic past. Any sign of wealth or bourgeois values was suspect and a target for destruction. The local and central governments were able to protect selected sites. Jade Buddha Temple was one of these. Most of the monks went into hiding, but a few brave men remained to keep the temple occupied. It was untouched. |
