  934. imaginary Zhōngshàn Avenue. (See Cards—Avenue, on the following pages.)
  935. Your partner’s cards match yours.
  936. Procedure: The player who will answer questions arranges the cards in
  937. hia hand to represent the left-to-right order of five buildings along
  938. the avenue (in any order).
  939. His partner asks whether one building is "near” (or "not far from”)
  940. another or whether the building is "far from" (or "not near") another.
  941. If the buildings are near, he asks whether one building is "alongside
  942. of" the other. If so, he finds out whether one building is "to the left
  943. of" or "to the right of" the other. (Remember that these term® are used
  944. from the point of view of someone inside the building facing the front
  945. door.) He continues until he has arranged the carda in his hand in the
  946. correct left-to-right order.
  947. The players exchange roles for the next round.
  948. Example: You are Speaker 1. You have arranged your cards as follows:
  949. ^Hípíng^ *H6ngqí * *RSnmín* ^No. 8 * _(t)Xīnhufi *
  950. Hotel Theater Market School Bookstore
  951. Speaker 2 puts his RÉnmín Market card face-up on the table. He then
  952. takes another card from his hand and asks
  953. - 32: Hóngqí Dlànyīngyuàn 11 Rénmín Càishich&ng yuSn bu yufinī
  954. - SI: Bù yu&n, Jiù zài Renmín Càishichǎngde pángbiānr.
  955. - S2: Zài zuSbianr háishi zài yòubianr?
  956. - SI: Zài zuSbianr.
  957. S2 puts his H6ngqí Theater card to the left of Rénmín Market. He takes
  958. another card from his hand and asks
  959. - S2: XInhuá Shūdiàn lí HÉnmín CàishichKng yuKn bu yuSn?
  960. - SI: HSn yuSn.
  961. 32 guesses that the bookstore might be on the other side of the theater
  962. from the market:
  963. - S2: LÍ FTÓNGQÍ DIÀNYĪNGYUÀN H&I J IN MAĪ
  964. SI: Bú Jìn, hSn yuSn.
  965. $2 puts the bookstore card above the other two cards on the table, since
  966. he does not know where the bookstore is. Then he takes another card from
  967. his hand:
  968. SĒ: Hepíng Find1an if RÉnmín CÙishiching yuSn bu yuKnī SI; Hen yuEn.
  969. Ē2 makes the same guess about the hotel that he made about the
  970. bookstore:
  971. E2: LÍ Hāngql Diànyīngyuàn hen J In ma?
  972. SI: Duī le, hěn Jin.
  973. 52 puts the hotel card to the left of the theater card. Then he returns
  974. to the bookstore card to see if he can put it to the left of the hotel
  975. card:
  976. S£í Xīnhufi Shudiàn lí Hoping F&ndiàn hen jìn mat
  977. Bl: Bú J in, hSn yuán,
  978. 82 tries out the ease direction with his last cord:
  979. 82: Dìbǎ XiSoxuě lí Répíng Find!In hín Jin ma1 SI: Bú Jīn, hSn yuán.
  980. B2 realises the only possible solution at this point. He places the
  981. school card and the bookstore card in order to the right of the market
  982. card:
  983. 82: Dibá XiScxué lí RÉnmín Caishichāng hěn Jin, Jiù tài BÉnmín
  984. CùiBhichEngde ySubianr. XÌnhu£ Shùdiàn lí Dìbā Xuéxiào híu jin, jiù tàí
  985. DÌU XuéxiÙode ySublanr. Shī bu shiì
  986. SI: Duì le.
  987. Additional Motes: The teacher may insist on full answers, and answers as
  988. close to the questions as possible. This will require answers such as
  989. Hépíng Fàndiàn lí Rennin CaishichSng bú Jīn., with correct placement of
  990. ths negative adverb bu.
  991. A bit more variety may be introduced into the game by equating rcushe qù
  992. kéyi with hSn jīa and bù yu£n and by equating sBu&he qù tù kéyi with h?ū
  993. yufai and bu jin. The third exchange in the example might then go like
  994. this:
  995. 52: Cong Xīnhuú Bhūdi&i dào Rínjufn CùishichSng zěnme qù? ZJtizbe qù
  996. keyi bu kéyiì

  1031. EXERCISE 1
1032. This exercise will give you practice following directions in a building.
1033. Two students at a Chinese college (a Chinese girl and an American) are
1034. talking. The setting is Taipei.
1035. You will hear the conversation three times. As you listen to it for the
1036. third time, translate each sentence orally during the pause provided on
1037. tape. Then compare your translation with the suggested translation given
  1038. by the speaker.
1039. You will need to know these expressions:
  1040. cèsuí             (toilet)
1041. dulniàn          (across from, opposite, facing; the side facing)
  1042. wàng              (to forget)
1043. xià 16u lai      (to come downstairs)
1044. shSng 16u qu     (to go upstairs)
1045. The full range of possibilities for going up and down stairs is
  1046. --------------- ----------------- ------------- -------------------
1047. shàng 16u lai (come upstairs) xià lóu lai (come downstairs)
1048. shàng lóu qu (go upstairs) xià 16u qu (go downstairs)
  1049. --------------- ----------------- ------------- -------------------
1050. In this conversation you will hear the verb kànjian as part of a
1051. question asking "whether." A "whether" question with kànjian, just like
1052. one with zhidao, is in the form of a statement.
1053. KI zhidao tū lál le meiyouí    (Do you know whether he came7)
1054. NI kànjian tā l£i le meíyou?   (Did you see whether he cemel)
  1055. EXERCISE 2
1056. Again, you will bear directions to places inside a building. Having come
1057. to a hospital to visit a aick friend, Mr. Levine etope in the lobby to
1058. ask for directions. He is talking to a receptionist st the information
1059. desk. (On the next page is a floor plan of the first and second floors
  1060. of the hospital.)
1061. Listen to the conversation two times. Then answer the questions below as
  1062. you listen again.
1063. You will hear these words in the conversation:
  1064. iSuti        (staircase, stairway, stairs)
1065. duīmiShir     (across from, opposite, facing; the side facing)
  1066. yàoshl       (if)
1067. nà           (then, in that case)
1068. One of the sentences in this exercise may be a little complicated to
  1069. unravel.
  1070. -------------------------- ---------
  1071. W3 zōu n&ge 16utī Jin?
1072. (I go on which staircase close?)
  1073. -------------------------- ---------
1074. ”Which staircase would be closest for me to go upstairs on?"
1075. This sentence has the same form as Nji sange xuésheng, nSge faKo? "Which
1076. of these three students is better (best)7" except that what 1b being
1077. compared is described in a sentence instead of a word or phrase.
1078. Something else that may give you a little difficulty is the expression
1079. lout I nail, as in Dàole lōutī n&li, wàng you z5u, ’’When you get to the
1080. staircase, go to the right.” In Chinese, the object of a verb of motion
1081. or location must be a place word. Any word that is not considered an
1082. Inherent place word must be followed by zhèli or nàll when used as a
1083. place word (following zài, dao, etc.).
  1084. QUESTIONS
1085. 1. According to the receptionist, which staircase is closer to Mr. MK's

  1112. DIALECT LISTENING EXERCISE
1113. As you remember, a Dialect Listening Exercise is a conversation from a
1114. preceding exercise spoken with a different pronunciation. You will learn
1115. to understand Chinese as pronounced by speakers of Chinese languages who
1116. have learned Standard Chinese as & second language.
1117. One common characteristic of dialect speech is that words which would
  1118. start with the sounds /zh/, /ch/, and /eh/ (i.e._(t) retroflex, or
1119. /r/-position, sounds) in Standard Chinese are pronounced with the aounde
  1120. /z/, /c/, and /s/ (i.e., dental, or ^/-position, sounda). Also, Initial
1121. /r/ may be pronounced like an English 1_, or z.

1349. Procedure: You ’’take¹¹ a room by giving directions to it. The first
1350. player puts his X in a room. He then gives his partner directions to
1351. that room from the building entrance. After placing an X in that room,
1352. the second player puts his 0 in another room and gives the first player
1353. directions from the building entrance.
1354. Directions to the next X and 0 may either start from the building
1355. entrance again or start from the last X and 0 (to be decided by the
1356. teacher or agreed upon between players).
1357. Example 1: (starting from the entrance each time) You are Speaker 1,
