Renmei Ding's Day
Renmei Ding studies Chinese language and literature in the East Asian 
Department in our University. Chinese is difficult to learn. Everyday, 
there are a lot of new vocabularies (which) need to be memorized, a 
lot of characters (which) need to be written, and a lot of homework 
(which) need to be done. So, Ding is always busy. 

Everyday, Ding gets up at six thirty. After getting up, she reads 
Chinese texts out loud, and memorizes Chinese vocabularies. At seven 
fifty, she brushes her teeth, and takes a shower. She takes the 
school bus to go to the dining hall at eight thirty. Her boy friend 
Xueyou Xie waits for her at the dining hall entrance. They eat their 
breakfast together at the dining hall. 

Ding’s Chinese class is at nine fifty in the morning. She is out of 
class at eleven ten. After class, sometimes she goes to library to 
read books; sometimes she goes to language lab to listen to the 
tapes. Her afternoon classes, some are two fifty’s, and others are 
four thirty’s. If there is no class in the afternoon, Ding sometimes 
goes to work at the bookstore, sometimes studies together with her 
classmates. Ding often eats dinner at six thirty. Sometimes she eats 
dinner with her boy friend, sometimes she eats by herself. 

In the evening, Ding often studies at the library. She also often 
goes to the computer room to use computers. She uses computer very 
often. She uses computer to do her homework. She also uses the 
computer to look for material and to write to her parents and her 
friends. Ding returns to her dorm to sleep at eleven thirty.

丁人美的一天 

丁人美在我们大学的东亚系学习中国语言和文学。中文不好学。每天有很多生词要背，

很多汉字要写，很多作业要做。所以，小丁总是很忙。 



小丁每天六点半起床。起床以后，她朗读中文课文，背中文生词。七点五十分，她刷牙，

洗澡。八点三十分，她坐校车去食堂。她的男朋友谢学友在食堂的门口等她。他们一起

在食堂吃早饭。



小丁的中文课是上午九点五十分的。十一点十分下课。下课以后，她有时候去图书馆看

书，有时候去语言实验室听录音。下午，小丁有时候有课，有时候没有课。她下午的课，

有的是两点五十分的，有的是四点半的。如果下午没有课，小丁有时候去书店工作，有时

候跟她的同学一起学习。



小丁常常六点半吃晚饭。晚饭她有时候跟她的男朋友一起吃，有时候她一个人吃。晚上，

小丁常常在图书馆学习。她也常常去电脑室用电脑。小丁常用电脑。她用电脑做作业，

她也用电脑找资料，给她爸爸，妈妈和朋友写信。小丁十一点半回宿舍睡觉。

Dīng Rénmĕi de Yìtiān


Dīng Rénmĕi zài wŏmen dàxué de Dōngyàxì xuéxí zhōngguóyŭyán 
hé wénxué. Zhōngwén bù hăo xué. Mĕitiān yŏu hĕnduó shēngcí yào 
bèi, hĕnduō Hànzì yào xiĕ, hĕn duō zuòyè yào zuò, suŏyĭ Xiăo 
Dīng zŏngshì hĕn máng. 

Xiăo Dīng mĕitiān liùdiăn bàn qĭchuáng. Qĭchuáng yĭhòu, Tā 
lăngdú Zhōngwén kèwén, bèi zhōngwén shēngcí. Qīdiăn wŭshífēn, 
tā shuāyá , xĭzăo. Bādiăn sānshífēn, Tā zuò xiàochē qùshítáng. 
Tāde nán péngyŏu Xiè Xuéyŏu zài shítáng ménkŏu dĕng tā. Tāmen 
yìqĭ zài shítáng chīzăofàn. 

Xiăo Dīng de Zhōngwén kè shì shàngwŭ jiŭdiăn wŭshífēnde. Shíyī
diăn shífēn xiàkè Xiàkè yĭhòu, tā yŏushíhòu qù túshūguăn kàn shū, 
yŏushíhòu qù yŭyán híyànshi tīng lùyīn. Xiàwŭ Xiăo Dīng yŏushíhòu 
yŏu kè, yŏushíhòu méiyŏu kè. Tā xiàwŭ de kè yŏude shì liăngdiăn wŭshí 
fēn de, yŏude shì sìdiăn bàn de. Rúguŏ xiàwŭ méiyŏu kè, Xiăo Dīng yŏu
shíhòu qù shūdiàn gōngzuò, yŏushíhòu gēn tāde tóngxué yìqĭ xuéxí. Xiăo 
Dīng chángchang liùdiăn bàn chī wănfàn. Wănfàn tā yŏushíhòu gēn nán 
péngyŏu yìqĭ chī. Yŏushíhòu tā yī gè rén chīfàn. 

Wănshàng, Xiăo Dīng chángchang zài túshūguăn xuéxí Tāyĕ chángchang qù 
diànnăo shì yòng diànnăo. Xiăo Dīng hĕn cháng yòng diànnăo. Tāyòng 
diànnăo zuòzuòyè tāyĕ yòng diànnăo zhăo zīliào, gĕi tābàba, māma,

1. More about measure words:
Consider the following sentence from the dialogue 我 给 小 丁 留 个 话 ， 好 吗 ？ 
Before the measure word 个  the  numeral 一 is understood。 The sentence can go 
like this: 我 给 小 丁 留 一 个 话 ， 好 吗 ？ 
The numeral 一  can often be omitted before the measure word 个 ， and sometimes 
before other measure words as well.

2. Passive voice:
English has a specialized inflectional form for the passive voice of a verb. 
It is used when the subject of a sentence or clause represents something that 
is acted on.  There are several ways of expressing an equivalent meaning in 
Chinese. One is simply to invert a verb-object phrase to produce a sentence 
in the passive voice. For example:
1) Sentence:我要做作业 。  Wŏ yào zuò zuòyè.     I need to do the homework.
Transform:  作 业 要 做 。	Zuòyè yào zuò.	The homework needs to be done.
Some more examples:
2) 老 师 说 这 课 不 教 。 　Lăoshī shuō zhè kè bù jiāo. 
The teacher said this lesson wouldn’t be covered.
3)  这 个 汉 字 也 要 写 吗 ？   Zhè gè Hànzì yĕ yào xiĕ ma?
Should this character be written?
	
3. The expression of 有 的 ....有 的 .....:
The indefinite pronoun 有 的 , which means “some” in English, can be used as a  
subject in a sentence. For example:
4) 有 的 喜 欢 喝 茶 。   Yŏu de xĭhuan hē chá.	Some like to drink tea.
5) 有 的 坐 车 去 实 验 室 。 Yŏu de zuò chē qù shìyànshi.
　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　Some went to the lab by car.
When two or more one clauses each introduced by 有 的 , are strung together, we 
term the pattern alternative construction. In this construction, each clause led 
by 有 的  expresses a possible outcome or course of action with respect to some 
choice or some undertaking. For instance:
6) 阅 览 室 有 很 多 人 。 有 的 看 书 ， 有 的 找 资 料  。 
Yuèlănshì yŏu hĕn duō rén. Yŏu de kàn shū, yŏu de zhăo zīliào.
There are a lot of people in the reading room. Some are reading; some are  looking 
for informational material.
7) 我 们 班 有 二 十 个 学 生 。 有 的 是 华 裔 美 国 人 ， 有 的 是 美 国 黑  人 ， 有 的 
是 美 国　白 人 。 
Wŏmen bān yŏu èrshí ge xuésheng. Yŏu de shì　huáyī　Mĕiguó rén， yŏu de shì　Mĕiguó　hēirén，
yŏu de shì Mĕiguó báirén.
There are twenty students in our class. Some are Chinese Americans; some are black    
Americans; and some are white Americans.


Speech Patterns:

1.Passive voice:

1. 谁 说 这 课 书 要 背 ？ 王 老 师 。   
2. 这 辆 黑 车 卖 不 卖 ？  不 卖 。 我 女 儿 很 喜 欢 这 辆 车 。 我 留 给 她 用 。
