What Day of the Week
Is It Today?

After class, Ding waits for Teacher Wang at the entrance of the Teaching
Building. She wants to invite Wang to spend the Thanksgiving at her house.

   Wang: Ding, you are still here.
   Ding: yes, I’m waiting for you.
   Wang: What can I do for you (What’s the matter)?
   Ding: Are you free this Thursday?
   Wang: What date is this Thursday?
   Ding: Twenty-seventh, November twenty-seventh, Thanksgiving day.
      	 Teacher wang, are  you free this Thursday? I want to invite to 
         spend the holiday at my house.
   Wang: Thanks, thanks. We don’t have class this Thursday. I do have time.
   Ding: You know Thanksgiving is a holiday for family members to get together. 
         You are here by yourself, so I want to invite you to celebrate the 
         holiday with us.
   Wang: Thanks, thank. I certainly will go, certainly will.
   Ding: You don’t have a car. I will ask my boyfriend to pick you up. Where 
         are you living now?
   Wang: I’m still living in the university’s guest house.
   Ding: Xie will pick you up at two in the afternoon, OK?
   Wang: At two? Fine, fine. I will wait for him at the gate of the guest house 
         at two Thursday afternoon.
   Ding: OK.  So see you Thursday.
   Wang: See you.

这个星期四是几号？

下课以后，小丁在教学楼门口等王老师。她想请王老师到她家过感恩节。 



   王： 小丁，你还在这儿。

   丁： 是啊，我等您呢。 

   王： 有事吗？

Teacher Wang's Letter
to His Wife 

Dear Xijing:

How are you?
Today is the last Thurday of November, and also the American Thanksgiving Holiday. 
The university has a day off, so I got the time to write to you. Thanksgiving is a 
holiday for family reunion. I am far away from home by myself, so many a students 
of mine invite me to spend the holiday with their families. I accept the invitation 
of Ding, an American student of mine, and will go to her house to celebrate the holiday 
together with her family. This is my first time to be a guest at an American home, 
and participate in an American holiday party; at the same time, it is also the family’s 
first time to entertain a Chinese guest; I think it will be very interesting.

The tenth day of next month is Kaikai’s fifth birthday. I am not home, and would like 
it very much that you plan him a pleasant birthday. Please tell him that Daddy loves 
him, and misses him; and tell him that Daddy wishes him happy, healthy, and a joyous 
birthday. December tenth I will call home. Talk to you then.

**the different between 号 and 日 is that 号  is used in spoken language, 
while 日 is used in written.

**Note that there is another expression for the English “week”, that is 礼 拜  
lĭbài, which can be used to substitute 星 期 .

** Note that the word order is bigger unit before the smaller unit, and the calendar 
date before the day of the week.

2. Expressions for age:
A: Asking for age:
你 几 岁 ？  Nǐ jǐ suì ？ 	How old are you?
the expression is used to ask for the age of a teenaged or younger person.
你 多 大 ？ 	Nǐ duō dà ？	    How old are you?
the expression is use to learn the age of  one’s contemporary.
你 爸 爸 多 大 岁 数 ？     Nǐ bàba duō dà suìshù?	How old is your dad?
the expression is use to ask for the age of one’s elders.
您 高 寿 ？ 	Nín gāo shòu?		How old are you?
this expression is used to ask for the age of a senior.

3.The nominal predicate:
In addition to verbs and adjectives, nouns and noun phrases can also function as 
a predicate in a Chinese sentence. For instance:
你 弟 弟 几 岁 ？     Nǐ dìdi jǐ suì ？	How old is your younger sister?
Sub.     Pre.
今 天 星 期 五 。 	Jīntiān xīngqī wǔ.   It is Friday today.
Sub.      Pre.
A sentence with a nominal predicate usually is a sentence indicating age, day or date, 
solar terms, opation, etc. To negate the sentences, add  不 是    before the predicates. 
For example:
今 天 不 是 星 期 五 。   Jīntiān bú shì xīngqī wǔ .    It is not Friday today.
现 在 不 是 下 午 八 点 。  Xiànzài bú shì xiàwǔ bā diǎn . It is not 8:00 PM now.

4. The prefix  第:
A Chinese ordinal number can be formed by placing the prefix 第 before numerals. For example:
  一             yī            one           第一     dì yī           the first
  二十 五       èrshíwǔ     twenty-five       第 二 十 五   dì èrshíwǔ	  the twenty-fifth
  一 百         yìbăi       one hundred       第 一 百     dì yìbăi        the one hundredth

Being a type of specifier, ordinal numbers take a measure with the noun. For instance:

  第 一 个 孩 子     dì yí ge háizi	        the first child
  第 四 本 书 	   	dì sì běn shū 	 	the fourth book
  第 十 五 条 裤 子  dì shíwŭ tiáo kùzi     the fifteenth pair of pants
  今 年 的 第 三 天   jīnnián de dì sān tiān	the third day of this year
			
5. The expression 第 X 次 :
次  ( time, occasion ) is a measure word, hence ‘ first time ’ is 第 一 次 in Chinese. The first 
( or whichever )  time  of doing something is expressed according to this formula:

这 /那 是 + Subj. + 第 一 次  + V./V(erb) P(hrase)
	
  这 是 我 第 一 次 去 台 湾 。 
  Zhè shì wǒ dì yí cì qù Táiwān . 
  This is for me the first time of going to Taiwan.

  这 是 你 第 几 次 看 这 本 书 ？ 
  Zhè shì nǐ dì jǐ cì kàn zhè běn shū ？	  
  Is this for you the whichever time of reading this book?
