12.
The 是 shi ... 的 de construction

 13.
We have learned that the 是...的 shì... de construction is used
 14. to emphasis stative verbs, for

 15.
example, 这条裙子是新的 zhè tiáo qúnzi shì xīn de this skirt is new.
 16. In this session I

 17.
would like to introduce the other two usages of the 是...的 shì
 18. ... de construction.

 19.
1. 是...的 shì... de is used for emphasis in the past of time
 20. when and the way something is

 21.
done. For example, when you want to tell someone that it was
 22. last May that you went to

 23.
China by train, the 是...的 shì... de construction should be
 24. used as demonstrated below.

 25.
我 是 去 年 五 月 坐 火 车 去 中

 26.
国

 27.
的。

 28.
wǒ shì qùnián wǔyuè zuò huǒchē qù Zhōngguó de

 29.
As you may have noticed, 是 shì and 的 de are used like a
 30. “frame” that includes the time, the

 31.
method, the action and the place. If the object of a sentence
 32. has no description or has no any

 33.
other subordination, like the one above, 的 de can be placed
 34. after the verb to emphasize the

 35.
place. In other words, the sentence above could look like
 36. this

 37.
我 是 去 年

 38.
五 月

 39.
坐 火 车

 40.
去 的 中

 41.
国。

 42.
wǒ shì qùnián wǔyuè zuò huǒchē qù de Zhōngguó

 43.
2. 是...的 shì... de can also be used to emphasise the agent of
 44. a sentence. For instance:

 45.
这 件 事 是 我 作 的。

 46.
zhè jiàn shì shì wǒ zuò de

 47.
It was me who did this.

 48.
101Elementary Chinese Grammar 基础汉语语法

 49.
2011

 50.
这 本 书 是 鲁 迅 写 的。

 51.
zhèběn shū shì Lǔxùn xiě de

 52.
It was Luxun who wrote that book. / That book was written by
 53. Luxun.

 54.
When translating a passive English sentence into Chinese, it
 55. is important to identify the

 56.
emphasis of the sentence first. If the emphasis is on the
 57. agent, then the 是...的 shì... de

 58.
construction should be applied. On the other hand, if the
 59. emphasis is on the outcome of an

 60.
action, but not on the agent, then the 被 bèi construction or
 61. notional passive construction

 62.
should be applied. For example

 63.
桌

 64.
子 上

 65.
的 菜 是 我 吃 的。

 66.
zhuōzi shàng de cài shì wǒ chī de.

 67.
It was me who ate the food on the table.

 68.
桌

 69.
子 上

 70.
的 菜 (被 我) 吃 完 了。

 71.
zhuōzi shàng de cài (bèi wǒ) chī wán le.

 72.
The food that was on the table has been eaten (by me).
