  9. <p>了 (le) has many uses. You probably first learned 了 (le) as a
  10. <a href="particle" class="uri" title="wikilink">particle</a> that
  11. tells you <a href="expressing_completion_with_&quot;le&quot;"
  12. title="wikilink">an action is completed</a>, which is also known as
  13. "了1." However, this article is not about that use of 了 (le);
  14. instead, it is about indicating a <em>change of state</em> (了2). In
  15. other words, there is now a new situation, or there is about to be
  16. a new situation. This whole "change of state" idea can take
  17. numerous forms, and this page includes some helpful examples.</p>
  18. <h2 id="structure">Structure</h2>
  19. <p>When used in this way, 了(le) is placed at the end of the
  20. sentence to indicate a new situation.</p>

  67. <h2 id="too-general">Too General?</h2>
  68. <p>The whole "change of state" concept might seem very general, and
  69. it is. It's vague, and it also takes some getting used to. You
  70. should expect it to take a while to get used to this use of 了
  71. (le).</p>
  72. <p>Because it's a little vague and confusing, most learners find it
  73. useful to break this "change of state" 了 (le) down into more
  74. specific usages, such as using it to mean <a href=
  75. "Expressing_&quot;now&quot;_with_&quot;le&quot;" title=
  76. "wikilink">"now"</a>, <a href=
  77. "Expressing_&quot;already&quot;_with_just_&quot;le&quot;" title=
  78. "wikilink">"already"</a>, or <a href=
  79. "Expressing_&quot;not_anymore&quot;_with_&quot;le&quot;" title=
  80. "wikilink">"not anymore"</a>. Although these are all "flavors" of
  81. the "change of state" 了 (le), identifying them as specific cases
  82. can make it much easier to get used to using 了 (le) in this
  83. way.</p>
