9.
The particle 了 (le) has a <a href="Uses_of_"le""
10. title="wikilink">lot of uses. One of the most common is to
11. express the completion of an action. This is called <a href=
12. "Aspect" title="wikilink">aspect, which is not the same as
13. tense. Tense is about when an action happens: past,
14. present or future. Aspect is about whether the action is
15. complete in a certain time frame.

16.
Basic Pattern

17.
To indicate completeness with 了 (le), the structure is:

18.

19.
Subj. + Verb + 了 + Obj.

20.

21.
Notice that 了 (le) goes directly after the verb. This 了 (le) is
22. called verb 了 (le) or 了1.

23.
Examples

24.

25.

26.
你 今天 早上 吃 了 什么? Nǐ jīntiān
27. zǎoshang chī le shénme? What
28. did you eat this morning?

29.
他 买 了 一个 新 手机。 Tā mǎi le
30. yī gè xīn shǒujī.He bought a new cell
31. phone.

32.
昨天 晚上 我 看见 了 UFO。 Zuótiān
33. wǎnshang wǒ kànjiàn le UFO.I
34. saw a UFO last night.

35.
我 学 了 两 年 中文。Wǒ xué le
36. liǎng nián Zhōngwén. I studied Chinese
37. for two years.

38.
今年 夏天 我 跟 我 男朋友 去 了 台湾。 Jīnnián
39. xiàtiān wǒ gēn wǒ nánpéngyou qù le
40. Táiwān.I went to Taiwan with my
41. boyfriend this summer.

42.

43.

44.
The examples above indicate a completed action, but they might
45. also seem very similar to a "past tense" in English. To illustrate
46. that 了 (le) can also indicate that one action is completed before
47. another, see the following examples:

48.

49.

50.
你 到 了 告诉 我。future
51. actionNǐ dào le gàosu
52. wǒ.When you have arrived, tell
53. me.

54.
老板 走 了 以后, 你们 可以 走。 <span class=
55. "expl pdf-simple-expl">future action<span class=
56. "pinyin">Lǎobǎn zǒu le yǐhòu, nǐmen kěyǐ
57. zǒu.After the boss has left, you may
58. leave.

59.
你 找到 了 以后 , 给 我 打 电话。<span class=
60. "expl pdf-simple-expl">future actionNǐ
61. zhǎodào le yǐhòu, gěi wǒ dǎ diànhuà.<span class=
62. "trans">After you have found it, give me a call.

63.
你们 吃 了 饭 以后 , 可以 出去 。 <span class=
64. "expl pdf-simple-expl">future action<span class=
65. "pinyin">Nǐmen chī le fàn yǐhòu, kěyǐ
66. chūqù.After you have eaten your food,
67. you can go out.

68.
下 了 课 以后 ,我 要 问 老师 一些 问题。<span class=
69. "expl pdf-simple-expl">future actionXià
70. le kè yǐhòu, wǒ yào wèn lǎoshī yīxiē
71. wèntí.After class is over, I need to ask
72. the teacher a few questions.

73.

74.

75.
As you can see, 了 (le) can appear in sentences about the future
76. as well as the past. What's important is whether or not the action
77. has been completed, no matter what time frame we're
78. talking about. This also means that this 了 (le) isn't used with
79. habitual or continuous actions.
