16. basic usage of both 了 (le) and 过 (guo), then a special explanation
17. of how they sometimes work together is now in order.

46.
The Pattern with an Object

47.
For the examples above, you could have inserted an object to
48. modify the basic pattern, getting this:

49.

50.
Verb + 过 + Obj. + 了

51.

52.
The object has been inserted in the sentences below:

54.

55.
你 吃 过 饭 了 吗?<span class=
56. "pinyin">Nǐ chī guo fàn le
57. ma? Have you eaten
58. (already)?

59.
我 刷 过 牙 了。 <span class=
60. "pinyin">Wǒ shuā guo yá

62. (already).

63.
他 洗 过 澡 了。 <span class=
64. "pinyin">Tā xǐ guo zǎo
65. le.He has showered

67.
我 给 他 打 过 电话 了。<span class=
68. "pinyin">Wǒ gěi tā dǎ guo diànhuà
69. le.I called him
70. (already).

71.
客户 看 过 合同 了 吗?<span class=
72. "pinyin">Kèhù kàn guo hétong le
73. ma? Has the client read the contract
74. (already)?

75.

76.

77.
What 过 (guo) Does

78.
You would be right to point out that 过 (guo) is mainly used to
79. call attention to the fact that someone has had an
80. experience. This is the basic pattern pointed
81. out in the article on the <a href=
82. "Expressing_experiences_with_"guo"" title=
83. "wikilink">basic usage of the aspectual particle 过 (guo). In
84. the examples above, though, it's not any "once-in-a-lifetime"
85. experiences being expressed, it's more just the
86. information that these actions are done. Here, 过 (guo) and
87. 了 (le) work together to emphasize that an action is already
88. done. This is why the translations on the side add the word
89. "already" in parentheses at the end; this is the feeling the
90. sentences give you. In fact, to emphasize the idea of already
91. done even further, you could add the word for "already," 已经
92. (yǐjīng), before the verbs in the examples below, and it also works
93. just fine:

94.

95.

96.
她 已经 吃 过 饭 了。 <span class=
97. "pinyin">Tā yǐjīng chī guo fàn
98. le.She has already eaten (a
99. meal).

100.
我 已经 刷 过 牙 了。 <span class=
101. "pinyin">Wǒ yǐjīng shuā guo yá
102. le.I have already brushed my
103. teeth.

104.
他 已经 洗 过 澡 了。 <span class=
105. "pinyin">Tā yǐjīng xǐ guo zǎo
106. le.He has already had a
107. shower.

108.

109.

110.
When to Use 过 (guo) with 了
111. (le)

112.
So when would you use the sentences above? You'd be emphasizing
113. that the action has already occurred (so it doesn't need
114. to be done again), so it would probably be something like this:

115.
For the eating example:

116.

117.

118.
A:她 想 吃饭 吗 ? <span class=
119. "pinyin">Tā xiǎng chīfàn ma?Does she
120. want to eat?

121.
B:她 已经 吃
122. 过 饭 了。 Tā
123. yǐjīng chī guo fàn
124. le.She has already
125. eaten.

126.

127.

128.
For the tooth brushing example:

129.

130.

131.
A:别 忘记 刷牙。 <span class=
132. "pinyin">Bié wàngjì shuā yá.Don't forget
133. to brush your teeth.

134.
B:我 已经 刷
135. 过 牙 了。Wǒ
136. yǐjīng shuā guo yá
137. le.I have already brushed my
138. teeth.

139.

140.

141.
For the taking a shower example:

142.

143.

144.
A:他 应该 洗澡 。 <span class=
