  9. <p>Whether you need to express how long you lived somewhere, how
  10. long you studied astrophysics, or how long you worked as a mime,
  11. you'll need to use 了 (le) to express that time duration.</p>

  14. <p>Saying <em>how long</em> you did something <em>for</em> in
  15. Chinese can seem tricky, as there is no preposition as in English.
  16. Instead it's all about word order:</p>

  20. <p>So 了 (le) is placed after the verb (to indicate that <a href=
  21. "Expressing_completion_with_&quot;le&quot;" title="wikilink">the
  22. action is completed</a>), followed by the duration. This is how you
  23. talk about the duration of completed actions.</p>

  46. Concluded"</h2>

  48. <p>Note that the previous pattern can be used to express the
  49. duration of completed actions <em>which are no longer in
  50. progress</em>, although strictly speaking, it's not entirely clear
  51. if the actions are still ongoing or not. To indicate that the
  52. actions are definitely concluded (not ongoing), a <a href=
  53. "Time_words_and_word_order" title="wikilink">time word</a> may be
  54. inserted into the sentence to indicate that you're talking about an
  55. event in the past:</p>
