  9. <p>One of the fun things about Chinese is that when speaking, you
  10. can repeat a verb to express "a little bit" or "briefly." This is
  11. called <a href="reduplication" class="uri" title=
  12. "wikilink">reduplication</a>. It creates a casual tone, and a sense
  13. that whatever the action is, it's not going to take long.</p>
  14. <h2 id="reduplication-with-the-aa-pattern">Reduplication with the
  15. AA Pattern</h2>
  16. <h3 id="structure">Structure</h3>
  17. <p>In Chinese, verbs can be <a href="reduplicate" title=
  18. "wikilink">reduplicated</a> to indicate that they happen briefly or
  19. "a little bit."</p>
  20. <div class="jiegou">

  23. <p>Chinese grammar books frequently refer to the reduplication of a
  24. single-character word as a "AA" pattern. Note that for this
  25. pattern, the second verb's tone changes to the neutral tone.</p>

  71. <p>Using this kind of structure lightens the mood and seriousness
  72. of the question. It also adds variety to sentence structure.
  73. Because these phrases are used colloquially, there is not set rule
  74. to which verbs this can be applied to. There are some verbs that
  75. are often reduplicated and some verbs that sound weird when
  76. reduplicated. With practice and exposure, you will learn which ones
  77. are often used.</p>

  79. Reduplication with Two-Syllable Verbs</h2>
  80. <p>In the examples above, all verbs are only one syllable. Those
  81. verbs get reduplicated a lot, so those examples are quite useful.
  82. Occasionally, though, two-syllable verbs get reduplicated as well.
  83. When this happens, it's important to use the "ABAB" pattern for
  84. verbs (meaning the entire word is repeated), and not the <a href=
  85. "Reduplication_of_adjectives" title="wikilink">"AABB" pattern you
