9.
却 (què) is used to indicate something was contrary to
10. expectations, and is used in a similar way to <a href=
11. "Expressing_Contrariness_with_"dao"" title=
12. "wikilink">倒. However, it is generally followed by a negative
13. comment:

14.
Structure

15.
The overall structure of sentences that use 却 is something like
16. this:

17.

18.
Sentence, Subj. + 却 + ⋯⋯

19.

20.
Normally the first clause above makes a statement, and then the
21. second clause introduces something contrary, generally in the form
22. of a negative comment.

23.
It's also important to point out that 却 is not a <a href=
24. "conjunctions" title="wikilink">conjunction; it's an <a href=
25. "adverbs" title="wikilink">adverb. Practically speaking, this
26. means that rather than joining two statements, it goes
27. inside a statement (within the second clause).
28. Specifically, it needs to come after the subject and
29. before the verb. (Note that when you use a conjunction
30. like 但是 it comes before the subject! 却 is different in
31. this respect. Also, rather than replacing 但是, it can work
32. with it to add emphasis.

33.
Also, sometimes the subject of the second clause will be
34. omitted. If there is a subject, however, 却 definitely needs to come
35. after it.
