- <p>Normally when you see <span class="hanzi">得</span> it's a particle and is pronounced "<span class="pinyin">de</span>." However, it can also be an <a href="auxiliary_verb" title="wikilink">auxiliary verb</a>. In this case it's pronounced <span class="pinyin">děi</span> and means "<b>must</b>."</p>
