  13. <p>While not strictly tied to any "tense," the 是⋯⋯ 的 construction

  114. <p>You might be wondering, "can I still say the same thing without
  115. the 是 and the 的?" The answer is that in most cases, <em>no, not
  116. really</em>. While the 是 can sometimes be dropped, these examples
  117. sound weird without the 的. It's just a part of learning to ask
  118. questions naturally in Mandarin. You don't have to learn a "past
  119. tense," but you do have to learn this way of asking for details
  120. about the past, sooner or later.</p>
  121. <h2 id="when-to-use-是-的">When to Use 是⋯⋯ 的</h2>
  122. <p>As described above, the 是 ⋯⋯ 的 construction is used to draw
  123. attention to particular information in a sentence. Whereas a
  124. sentence without a 是 ⋯⋯ 的 construction might <em>describe</em> a
  125. situation, a sentence with a 是⋯⋯ 的 construction <em>explains</em>
  126. it. 是 ⋯⋯ 的 is not generally used for reporting new information, but
  127. for adding important details that make the information clearer.</p>
  128. <p>You could think of 是 ⋯⋯ 的 as being equivalent to saying one of
  129. the following in English:</p>
  130. <ul>
  131. <li>"The situation is that"</li>
  132. <li>"It's that... "</li>
  133. <li>"It was... that... "</li>
  134. </ul>
  135. <p>If the sentence could be formed with one of those phrases in
  136. English, it can probably use a 是⋯⋯ 的 construction in Chinese.
  137. Usually the topic of a 是⋯⋯ 的 sentence has already been
  138. established.</p>
  139. <h3 id="completed-action">Completed Action</h3>
  140. <p>It's important to note that a 是 ⋯⋯ 的 construction also indicates
  141. that an action has been completed. However, this is not the purpose
  142. of a 是 ⋯⋯ 的 construction. The association with a completed action
  143. is more like a <em>side effect</em> of 是 ⋯⋯ 的. This means you
  144. shouldn't use 是 ⋯⋯ 的 just to indicate that an action is completed.
  145. Use the <a href="aspect_particle_%E4%BA%86" title="wikilink">aspect
  146. particle 了</a> for that. Instead, use 是 ⋯⋯ 的 to draw attention to
  147. particular features of the action.</p>
  148. <h2 id="negating-是-的">Negating 是 ⋯⋯ 的</h2>
  149. <p>是 ⋯⋯ 的 sentences can only be negated with 不, as 没 can not be
  150. used to negate 是. Place 不 before 是 as you would in a standard
  151. sentence.</p>
  152. <h3 id="examples">Examples</h3>
  153. <div class="liju">
  154. <ul>
  155. <li>我们 <em>不</em> 是 坐 火车 来 的 。 <span class="pinyin">Wǒmen

  157. didn't come by train.</span></li>
  158. <li>这个 电话 <em>不</em> 是 打给他的 。 <span class="pinyin">Zhège diànhuà

  163. her.</span></li>
  164. </ul>
  165. </div>
  166. <p>Note that negating a 是 ⋯⋯ 的 construction creates the implication
  167. that the action in the sentence <em>was</em> carried out, and only
  168. the detail emphasized by 是 ⋯⋯ 的 is being denied. So, in the last
  169. sentence, the implication is that 你 didn't go out with 她, but
  170. <em>did</em> go out with <em>someone</em>. So negative 是 ⋯⋯ 的
  171. constructions would work nicely in the final scenes of detective
  172. dramas.</p>
  173. <h2 id="used-in-a-questions">Used in a Questions</h2>
