  9. <p>Although it's standard practice to put a word or phrase that
  10. modifies a verb <em>before</em> the verb, there are, of course,
  11. exceptions. <a href="%E7%BB%99" class="uri" title="wikilink">给</a>
  12. (gěi) is one of those exceptions; it sometimes comes before the
  13. verb, and sometimes after. This article is about when it comes
  14. after.</p>

  17. <p>Note that the verbs that fit into this pattern are normally
  18. single-syllable verbs.</p>

  67. <p>Additionally, you can add <a href="%E6%8A%8A" class="uri" title=
  68. "wikilink">把</a> into this structure. This does not change the
  69. meaning of the sentence and when used in context can even add
  70. emphasis to what's being done and given.</p>

  141. <h2 id="academic-debate">Academic Debate</h2>
  142. <p>Although 给 phrases should normally precede a verb like any other
  143. prepositional phrase, they sometimes come after. Why have it both
  144. ways? There is some academic debate over whether this 给 is actually
  145. a <a href="preposition" class="uri" title=
  146. "wikilink">preposition</a> or a type of verb (often called a
  147. "co-verb"), or even a type of <a href="complement" class="uri"
  148. title="wikilink">complement</a>. This type of discussion is outside
  149. the scope of this article, however.</p>
