  10. "wikilink">potential complements</a> that indicate whether or not
  11. the action is actually possible. They are useful in Chinese to say
  12. if an action can take place.</p>
  13. <h2 id="affirmative-pattern">Affirmative Pattern</h2>
  14. <p>Structurally, potential complements are closely related to both
  15. <a href="result_complement" title="wikilink">result complements</a>
  16. and <a href="direction_complement" title="wikilink">direction
  17. complements</a>, so it helps to be familiar with those first. The
  18. most important and commonly used potential complements are derived
  19. from other complements such as the following:</p>

  34. <p>Potential complements can be positive or negative. What this
  35. means is fairly intuitive - potential complements can be used to
  36. express that something <em>can</em> happen or that it
  37. <em>can't</em>.</p>
