  3. designed for use by foot patrols when contact is made with the
  4. enemy. Contact may be through chance contact, air observation or
  5. attack, or ambush.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Chance contact with the enemy is possible at any time. In case
  6. of emergency, you cannot count on anybody's help. To survive,
  7. everyone must be trained to act automatically and in close
  8. cooperation.</p></li></ol></div></li><li class="listitem"><p>Immediate Action Drills</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p>Immediate action drills are drills designed to teach you to
  9. act quickly and decisively in case of visual or physical contact
  10. with the enemy. Your actions should be:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p>Simple in structure and flexible in performance</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Restricted to minimum signals or commands</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Appropriate to the given type of combat unit and the
  11. situation</p></li></ol></div></li><li class="listitem"><p>Types of immediate action drills:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p>Immediate halt drill</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Air observation drill</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Chance contact drills:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p>Hasty ambush</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Immediate assault</p></li></ol></div></li><li class="listitem"><p>Counter-ambush drills:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p>Near ambush</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Far ambush</p></li></ol></div></li></ol></div></li></ol></div></li><li class="listitem"><p>Arm-and-Hand (Silent) Signals</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p>Freeze!</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Enemy in sight!</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Left! Front! Right!</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Hasty ambush (left or right)!</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>All clear!</p></li></ol></div></li><li class="listitem"><p> Immediate Halt Drill</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p>This drill is used when the situation requires the immediate,
  12. in-place halt of the patrol. This is the situation when the
  13. patrol detects the enemy but is not itself detected. </p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Actions taken:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p>The first man to detect the enemy gives the silent
  14. signal "Freeze!"</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Everyone halts immediately, in-place, weapon at the
  15. ready.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Every man remains motionless and awaits further
  16. orders.</p></li></ol></div></li></ol></div></li><li class="listitem"><p>Air Observation Drill</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p>This drill reduces the danger of detection and attack by
  17. aircraft.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Actions taken:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p>The first man to detect an aircraft signals
  18. "Freeze!''</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>The patrol leader identifies the aircraft and gives
  19. further commands.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>If attacked, form a line at right angles to the line
  20. of flight. This will make the patrol less
  21. vulnerable.*</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Between attacks, find better cover and
  22. concealment.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Fire at the aircraft only when the patrol leader
  23. orders it.</p></li></ol></div></li></ol></div></li><li class="listitem"><p>Chance Contact Drills</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p>Hasty ambush:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p>This drill is both a self-defense measure used to
  24. avoid contact and an offensive measure used to make
  25. contact. It is often used in conjunction with
  26. (immediately after) the immediate halt drill.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Actions taken:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p>The signal "Hasty ambush (right)!" is
  27. given.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>The entire patrol moves immediately to the
  28. (right)side.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Everyone quickly finds concealment.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>The command to begin the ambush is the
  29. shout"Fire," where upon everyone opens
  30. fire.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>The command "Fire" may be given by:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p>The patrol leader when the enemy is most
  31. vulnerable.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Anyone who has been detected by the
  32. enemy.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>A designated individual (for example, the
  33. point or last man) after a certain number of enemy
  34. soldiers have reached or passed him.</p></li></ol></div></li></ol></div></li></ol></div></li><li class="listitem"><p>Immediate assault:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p>This drill is used, defensively, to make and
  35. quickly break unwanted but unavoidable contact and,
  36. offensively, to decisively engage the enemy.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Actions taken:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p>Men nearest the enemy open fire and shout
  37. "Contact, front (right, left, rear)."</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>The patrol moves quickly into line formation
  38. and assaults.</p><p>(1) When used defensively:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p>The assault is stopped if the enemy
  39. withdraws and contact is broken quickly.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>If the enemy stands fast and the assault is
  40. carried through the enemy positions, movement is
  41. continued until contact is completely
  42. broken.</p></li></ol></div><p>(2) When used offensively, the enemy is
  43. aggressively assaulted. The enemy must be totally
  44. destroyed.</p></li></ol></div></li></ol></div></li></ol></div></li><li class="listitem"><p> Counter-ambush Drills</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p>Near ambush:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p>The killing zone is under heavy fire from close
  45. range. There is little time or space to maneuver or
  46. to seek cover. You must get out quickly or you will
  47. be killed.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>If attacked by a near ambush, react as
  48. follows:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p> If in the killing zone, without waiting for
  49. order or signal:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p>Assault directly into the ambush
  50. position.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Occupy the ambush position (it is the safest
  51. place to be).</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Continue the attack or break contact, as
  52. directed.</p></li></ol></div></li><li class="listitem"><p>If not in the killing zone, maneuver against
  53. the attackers as directed.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Continue the attack to eliminate the ambush
  54. or to break contact as directed.</p></li></ol></div></li></ol></div></li><li class="listitem"><p>Far ambush:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p>The killing zone is also under heavy fire, but from a
  55. greater range. This provides you some room to maneuver
  56. and some opportunity to find cover at a lesser risk of
  57. destruction.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>If attacked by a far ambush, react as
  58. follows:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p> If in the killing zone, without waiting for
  59. order or signal:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p>Immediately return fire.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Find cover quickly.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Continue firing until directed
  60. otherwise.</p></li></ol></div></li><li class="listitem"><p>If not in the killing zone, maneuver against
  61. the ambush force as directed.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p> Continue the attack to eliminate the ambush
  62. or to break contact as directed.</p></li></ol></div></li></ol></div></li></ol></div></li><li class="listitem"><p>Use of Immediate Action Drills</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist"><li class="listitem"><p>Some drills may be used safely for a long time (immediate
  63. halt, hasty ambush). Others (immediate assault), if used too
  64. often, could be dangerous. The enemy may detect a pattern and
  65. set a trap for you.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Study your drills. Always try to improve them, and rehearse
  66. them frequently.</p></li></ol></div></li></ol></div><p>
