  5. </p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist" type="I"><li class="listitem"><p>Introduction</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist" type="A"><li class="listitem"><p>This lesson describes and discusses immediate action drills
  6. designed for use by foot patrols when contact is made with the
  7. enemy. Contact may be through chance contact, air observation or
  8. attack, or ambush.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Chance contact with the enemy is possible at any time. In case
  9. of emergency, you cannot count on anybody's help. To survive,
  10. everyone must be trained to act automatically and in close
  11. cooperation.</p></li></ol></div></li><li class="listitem"><p>Immediate Action Drills</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist" type="A"><li class="listitem"><p>Immediate action drills are drills designed to teach you to
  12. act quickly and decisively in case of visual or physical contact
  13. with the enemy. Your actions should be:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist" type="I"><li class="listitem"><p>Simple in structure and flexible in performance</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Restricted to minimum signals or commands</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Appropriate to the given type of combat unit and the

Right!</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Hasty ambush (left or right)!</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>All clear!</p></li></ol></div></li><li class="listitem"><p> Immediate Halt Drill</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist" type="A"><li class="listitem"><p>This drill is used when the situation requires the immediate,
  15. in-place halt of the patrol. This is the situation when the
  16. patrol detects the enemy but is not it­self detected. </p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Actions taken:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist" type="I"><li class="listitem"><p>The first man to detect the enemy gives the silent
  17. signal "Freeze!"</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Everyone halts immediately, in-place, weapon at the
  18. ready.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Every man remains motionless and awaits further
  19. orders.</p></li></ol></div></li></ol></div></li><li class="listitem"><p>Air Observation Drill</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist" type="A"><li class="listitem"><p>This drill reduces the danger of detection and attack by
  20. aircraft.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Actions taken:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist" type="1"><li class="listitem"><p>The first man to detect an aircraft signals
  21. "Freeze!''</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>The patrol leader identifies the aircraft and gives
  22. further commands.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>If attacked, form a line at right angles to the line
  23. of flight. This will make the patrol less
  24. vulnerable.*</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Between attacks, find better cover and
  25. concealment.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Fire at the aircraft only when the patrol leader
  26. orders it.</p></li></ol></div></li></ol></div></li><li class="listitem"><p>Chance Contact Drills</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist" type="A"><li class="listitem"><p>Hasty ambush:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist" type="1"><li class="listitem"><p>This drill is both a self-defense measure used to
  27. avoid contact and an offensive measure used to make
  28. contact. It is often used in conjunction with
  29. (immediately after) the immediate halt drill.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Actions taken:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist" type="a"><li class="listitem"><p>The signal "Hasty ambush (right)!" is
  30. given.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>The entire patrol moves immediately to the
  31. (right)side.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Everyone quickly finds concealment.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>The command to begin the ambush is the
  32. shout"Fire," where upon everyone opens
  33. fire.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>The command "Fire" may be given by:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist" type="i"><li class="listitem"><p>The patrol leader when the enemy is most
  34. vulnerable.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Anyone who has been detected by the
  35. enemy.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>A designated individual (for example, the
  36. point or last man) after a certain number of enemy
  37. soldiers have reached or passed him.</p></li></ol></div></li></ol></div></li></ol></div></li><li class="listitem"><p>Immediate assault:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist" type="1"><li class="listitem"><p>This drill is used, defensively, to make and
  38. quickly break unwanted but unavoidable contact and,
  39. offensively, to decisively engage the enemy.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Actions taken:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist" type="a"><li class="listitem"><p>Men nearest the enemy open fire and shout
  40. "Contact, front (right, left, rear)."</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>The patrol moves quickly into line formation
  41. and assaults.</p><p>(1) When used defensively:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist" type="a"><li class="listitem"><p>The assault is stopped if the enemy
  42. withdraws and contact is broken quickly.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>If the enemy stands fast and the assault is
  43. carried through the enemy positions, movement is
  44. continued until contact is completely
  45. broken.</p></li></ol></div><p>(2) When used offensively, the enemy is
  46. aggressively assaulted. The enemy must be totally
  47. destroyed.</p></li></ol></div></li></ol></div></li></ol></div></li><li class="listitem"><p> Counter-ambush Drills</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist" type="A"><li class="listitem"><p>Near ambush:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist" type="1"><li class="listitem"><p>The killing zone is under heavy fire from close
  48. range. There is little time or space to maneuver or
  49. to seek cover. You must get out quickly or you will
  50. be killed.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>If attacked by a near ambush, react as
  51. follows:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist" type="a"><li class="listitem"><p> If in the killing zone, without waiting for
  52. order or signal:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist" type="1"><li class="listitem"><p>Assault directly into the ambush
  53. position.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Occupy the ambush position (it is the safest
  54. place to be).</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Continue the attack or break contact, as
  55. directed.</p></li></ol></div></li><li class="listitem"><p>If not in the killing zone, maneuver against
  56. the attackers as directed.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Continue the attack to eliminate the ambush
  57. or to break contact as directed.</p></li></ol></div></li></ol></div></li><li class="listitem"><p>Far ambush:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist" type="I"><li class="listitem"><p>The killing zone is also under heavy fire, but from a
  58. greater range. This provides you some room to maneuver
  59. and some opportunity to find cover at a lesser risk of
  60. destruction.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>If attacked by a far ambush, react as
  61. follows:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist" type="a"><li class="listitem"><p> If in the killing zone, without waiting for
  62. order or signal:</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist" type="1"><li class="listitem"><p>Immediately return fire.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Find cover quickly.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Continue firing until directed
  63. otherwise.</p></li></ol></div></li><li class="listitem"><p>If not in the killing zone, maneuver against
  64. the ambush force as directed.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p> Continue the attack to eliminate the ambush
  65. or to break contact as directed.</p></li></ol></div></li></ol></div></li></ol></div></li><li class="listitem"><p>Use of Immediate Action Drills</p><div class="orderedlist"><ol class="orderedlist" type="A"><li class="listitem"><p>Some drills may be used safely for a long time (immediate
  66. halt, hasty ambush). Others (immediate assault), if used too
  67. often, could be dangerous. The enemy may detect a pattern and
  68. set a trap for you.</p></li><li class="listitem"><p>Study your drills. Always try to improve them, and rehearse
  69. them frequently.</p></li></ol></div></li></ol></div><p>
