Above is Liu Shaoqi 刘少奇 (Liú Shàoqí, 1898 – 1969) . Chairman of the People’s Republic of China (1959–68).
The central portrait is of a young Zhou Enlai 周恩来 (Zhōu Ēnlái,1898-1976). Premier of the People's Republic of China, (1949–76). At the bottom, Deng Xiaoping 邓小平 (Dèng Xiǎopíng, 1904 - 1997) riding in a motorcade October 1, 1984. This is well past the period of the Underground City, but it was included in the photographs on display. Deng Xiaoping was First Vice Premier of the People's Republic of China (1975 – 1983). As a member of the leadership of the Communist Party of China, Deng led China towards "socialist" market economics. After Mao Zedong's death, Deng gained control of policy, although not by means of high public office. He exerted control and direction from his position within the CCP (Chinese Commuist Party). |
