We had come into the hutong from the west and it was a bit of a walk. Of course there was some meandering involved and a few conversations with people we met, so it took an hour to go from Qianmen Avenue, the main shopping street, to our destination. When we left the Underground City we turned to the east and within minutes reached the modern world. Above is a Chinese medicine factory and below is a major bus terminus and lots of big modern office buildings and shopping centers.
In 2008, I printed the above picture to show the cab driver so we could enter from the east. He laughed when he saw it. "That's no longer there," he said. "Beijing changes by the hour, but I know where it was!" |
