| Sugar cane 甘蔗 (gānzhè) and coconut 椰子 (yēzi) are shown above and below. The coconut nut 椰子 yēzi is peeled so that you can buy just the coconut meat 椰肉 (yēròu) and spare yourself a lot of work. Sugarcane is peeled and eaten as a snack, raw. Of course it is processed into sugar, but people don't do that themselves - they just like the raw cane. Coconut is used as a natural sweetener in a lot of Chinese recipes, especially when combined with rice. It is also one of the most popular soft drinks in China. |
