Ren Yi 任颐 (1840-1895)

Ren Yi was born in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province in the south-east of China. His designated name
was Run 润 , but was changed to Bonian 伯年 later. His literary name was Xiaolou 小楼. He moved
first to Xiaoshan (now part of Hangzhou) and then to Shanghai. He is know as well as a painter as he
is as a calligrapher. He is representative of the Shanghai school. This painting was
completed in 1870 when he was 31.
