Couplet of Nine Characters - Ren Yi

Couplet of Nine Characters
2 of 2
Ren Yi
任颐 (1840-1895)
Seal script
Ren Yi is the foremost of the "Four Rens", the other three being:
Ren Xiong, Ren Xun, and Ren Yu. They
were located in Shanghai and were exposed to western influence and new ideas. They were members
of the "Shanghai School" but many of them came from Zhejiang Province as did Ren Yi. This position as
outsiders in Shanghai gave them a greater sensitivity to the effects of imperialism and to the abuses of
the Qing administration. Ren Yi was particularly aware of the disparity of position between the ordinary
man and those in power.
